Different inspection systems will be used depending on the material handled and on the type of defects to be detected.

Inspection of opaque surfaces

Material impervious to light is inspected in the reflective mode.

Translucent material is inspected in the transmitted light mode. Depending on the web transparency differently strong light sources will shine through the web.
